A Wicked Problem
Designing for the Opioid Epidemic:

In the 2017 Fall Semester at Jefferson University, my team of classmates decided to take on researching and designing for the opioid epidemic. The national epidemic had been front and center on the media, especially hard hit the Philadelphia Kensington neighborhood.

Concept Mapping:

First we went to the whiteboard as a group and put together what we new or guessed about the factors and different people involved in the opioid epidemic. This helped us share knowledge within our group, and wrap our heads around what we needed to find out and where our biggest questions were.

Card Sorting with Prevention Point

Our team met with some staff members from the non-profit Prevention Point Philadelphia. PPP's mission is to promote health, empowerment and safety for communities affected by drug use and poverty. The are located in the Kensington neighborhood which is the capital heroin and opiods in Philadelphia.

We conducted a card sorting exercise and affinity mapping with 3 staff members to learn their allies, strengths, weaknesses etc.

Peer Specialist

Our team then met with Jen a Peer Support Specialist. We conducting the same card sorting exercise as with Prevention Point. Getting another perspective from those on the front line of the epidemic.

When meeting with Jen we learned the following...

In order to recover people need 4 key elements:

  • home/safety

  • activity/community

  • health

  • purpose

Solution:

My final project was based on the 4 key elements to recovery. A website that a recovering addict uses daily to check in with themselves and make sure they are hitting their daily recovery goals. This would also be  monitored by a professional and possibly reviewed in person.  I chose an application instead of website so the user would have an easy way to check in with themselves (by grabbing their phone first thing in the morning) to make sure they are staying on the recovery path.

THE MOOD

For the look / feel of the deliverable I chose calming and soothing colors. I added in lighter colors (orange and yellow) to give a feeling of hope, looking at a sunrise.
